Herculaneum - the less famous but more fortunate fellow of the city of Pompeii
The city of Herculaneum, according to legend, created by Hercules, was located on the coast and was a luxury resort for the Roman nobility. Artisans and artists lived in the city, as evidenced by many finds. Like his more famous Roman neighbor Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried under a layer of ash due to the eruption of Vesuvius.
However, he was lucky much more. Despite the proximity to the volcano, most residents managed to escape - and all because of the wind blowing towards the city of Pompeii. Most of the citizens managed to escape from the city.
Only those who decided to wait out the eruption in shelters remained buried.
The city remained abandoned for a long time, but now it is partially blocked by the modern city of Ercolano.
Discover the ancient city was lucky in the early eighteenth century to a simple resident during the construction of the well. Then the excavations passed from hand to hand and were mostly amateurish, sometimes even barbaric. Therefore, the first building found was not preserved, and it was a large rich theater of Herculaneum, which accommodated about two thousand spectators.
Two hundred meters from the city itself, on the coast, was discovered "Villa Papyrus", named so because it turned out to be almost untouched by time, a chic antique library. And, of course, many statues and other artifacts.
Excavations are ongoing, but they are complicated by the modern city standing in the way. Therefore, part of the ancient remains underground and hides a lot of interesting findings.
Today Herculaneum is an excursion to another world, where ancient thinkers and sculptors, politicians and philosophers walked. If you like a thrilling feeling of loneliness of an abandoned city, ruins turning into a vibrant, beautiful city in your imagination, a look through the centuries, then you seem to have found a route for your next trip!
